During a university band rehearsal, we were struggling with a balance issue in a complex contemporary piece. The brasses were overpowering the woodwinds, but no matter how much I asked the brass to pull back, the problem persisted.

A young clarinet player in the back row—someone who rarely spoke up—tentatively raised his hand.

“I think … maybe it’s not that the brass is too loud. I think we’re sitting too far back. If the woodwinds moved forward a few rows, we might project better without the brass having to hold back so much.”

It was a simple, practical suggestion—not about playing dynamics, but about physical setup. We rearranged the seating. The balance improved immediately. I thanked him in front of the group.

After that incident, the clarinet player started contributing more regularly. All he needed was one moment of validation to find his voice.
