The book ‘Learn About Healing with Photobiomodulation in 40 Minutes’ by Dr. Alan Kwong Hing, DDS, MSc, with contributions from Dr. Michael R. Hamblin, PhD, and Dr. Jacqueline Crossman, PhD, serves as a concise and accessible guide to photobiomodulation (PBM), a therapy involving the use of specific wavelengths of light for healing and health improvement. It is intended for readers seeking non-invasive, drug-free alternatives to address a wide range of health conditions.
The book introduces PBM, its scientific basis, and mechanisms, emphasising its proven effectiveness and safety backed by over 10,000 studies. It discusses the historical development of light therapies, the science of light interactions with biological tissues, and practical applications across various fields, including dentistry, neurology, pain management, and sports recovery.
Written in an easy-to-understand format, this book combines scientific rigor with personal anecdotes and case studies, providing readers with both theoretical insights and practical guidance on the therapeutic use of light. It is suitable for health professionals and laypeople interested in learning about cutting-edge wellness therapies.
Over the last few decades, there has been an explosion of research into the potential therapeutic benefits of PBM. One the main benefits of PBM involves the musculoskeletal system: our muscles, bones, ligaments, and tendons. PBM can help relieve nonspecific, chronic low-back pain [31], can immediately reduce acute neck pain and lower chronic neck pain for up to 22 weeks [30], may be useful in treating pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and chronic joint disorders [32-35], and may help with frozen shoulders [36].
Other benefits of PBM, within the head region, are applications in dentistry to treat gum disease like periodontitis; speeding up the healing of infections around dental implants; treating complications after wisdom teeth extractions [37-39]; potentially slowing down male and female pattern hair loss; and treating traumatic brain injuries and strokes [40-42].
Recent research during these past several years has widened into more fields such as treating other tissue and organ conditions as well as a variety of other disorders.
Dr. Alan is the Founder of the PBM Group of Companies. He graduated with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree (with distinction), receiving the University Gold Medal, from the University of Western Ontario in Canada. He also completed a concurrent master’s degree in Pathology and has several other degrees.
He has received the prestigious pre–Doctoral IADR Hatton award for his research on MRIs and odontoblasts (cells in the pulp of teeth that produce dentine). He is a Diplomate of the ICOI and a Fellow of the International College of Dentists and the International Academy for Dental-Facial Esthetics. He is also a certified Occupational Therapist and has received numerous awards.
His interest in the field of photobiomodulation began almost 20 years ago. As an implant surgeon, he was looking for methods to help alleviate the pain associated with dental implant surgery, speed up bone-graft healing, and decrease the time for implant stability. His passion for developing dental, medical, and wellness devices for humans and animals using photobiomodulation as the primary energy source to enhance physical and mental health and wellness led to him forming PBM Healing International.
Dr Alan is an Editor for Dental Asia magazine and reviewer for the British Journal of Cancer Research. He enjoys lecturing around the world, most notably in the application of photobiomodulation, but also as a coach for personal and practice development.
He is a published author, most notably for the ‘E-Myth Dentist’ with Michael Gerber and will release on Dec 20 a new book, ‘Learn about Healing with Photobiomodulation in 40 Minutes’.
